Erik was sat in a table in a corner - it was harder for him to get lost working from corners - of the canteen. His laptop was on the table infront of him his headphones plugged in - as they were. The headphones allowed him to use audio settings on his laptop so he knew what it was exactly he was scrolling over.
Right now though he was note making based on the text book next to him - it was a braille version. From the speed he was typing no one would really realise he was blind, unless you were close enough to see the braile text book, and the fact the keys on his keyboard were braille. The fact he wasn't even looking at the screen barely might have been a bit of a give away as well.
His cane was placed on the chair next to him - near his bag. There was a half forgotten sandwich - cheese if you're interested - on a plate in arms reach. Every so often he'd pause in his work find the sandwich take a few bites out of it as he listened to the spoken review of what he'd typed so far - that was just a simple case of a few keys - as he did.

Sophie Kentworth, though a junior, was extremely new to the school. She had seen her place among those with money almost equal to hers, but she wasn't sure they had yet, so she didn't want to set with them. She scanned the cafe, noticing a young boy sitting by himself. She walked over to him, her red ballet flats barely making any noise on the tile floor. She walked confidently over to him, though her manner was actually anything but. She approached and announced her presence with, "Hi. My name's Sophie, mind if I sit?"
She noticed the off look in the boy's eyes and realized with a shock that he's blind. She took in the braille in his textbook and sat her tray down, tired of carrying it. She adjusted her white shorts and pink tank, even though the boy couldn't see her. That was no reason for her to look like a wreck. She let her pink Chanel bag drop to the crook of her elbow, so she could hold it more easily. She waited patiently for the boy's answer.

Erik looked up minimizing one screen so he could type the response in a spare window he kept behind the others All it was was a simple: 'Hey, its fine'. He shifted his laptop screen around slightly towards the direction of the voice. His eyes didn't once lose their vacant look, just staring into nothingness, but he'd see it as blackness

Sophie read the screen in a glance and sat. She wondered why the boy hadn't spoken the words. She supposed he was not only blind, but mute as well. He couldn't be deaf, though. He'd heard her speak to him. She sat her lunch bag on the table and opened it, pulling out a small salad. She then reached back inside and pulled out a tiny bottle of thousand island dressing. She opened the container which held her salad and slowly drizzled a small amount of dressing on it.
She then removed a fork, wrapped in a paper towel, from the bag. She took a nibble, then sighed inaudibly."So...what's your name?" she asked the boy, understanding his answer would come from the screen on the laptop, not from his lips.

Erik had briefly returned to his work, but upon hearing the question he again found the right window and typed his reply in 'Erik, Can I ask yours?' before turning his laptop to allow her to read.

Sophie read the screen, her eyes darting over it quickly as she read the message."Nice to meet you, Erik. Why, you certainly may. I'm Sophie. Sophie Kentworth." When she was young, Sophie had taken to saying her last name every time she had introduced herself. She knew the people in their hometown knew who she was, but she always felt the need to remind them.
Part of this was because of her daddy. When at a business meeting [which, believe it or not, he let her attend, usually] he would always start the meeting with, "Hello, everyone. First of all, I would like to introduce myself. I'm George. George Kentworth. For now, I'm Mr. Kentworth. Give me reason to let you call me anything other than that." Sophie loved the tone of his voice when he said that. He always sounded so...commanding. The room listened when he talked.
She picked it up as a small habit, and it became the only way she would introduce herself. It wasn't even a conscious effort anymore. "What grade are you, Erik?"

Erik smiled slightly as he heard the response. He easily typed in his own response 'its a pleasure to meet you Sophie. I'm a Freshman.... can I ask what grade you are'? before turning the laptop round taking a bite from his sandwich.

Sophie took another bite of her salad as she awaited his response. Her gaze travelled over the cafeteria, and she realized she was being watched. The table she originally wanted to sit at was sending glances her way, but she just smiled and gave a little wave, then turned back to Erik.
She noticed his laptop was turned around and she scanned the text on the screen."Most certianly. I'm a junior, myself. How are you liking freshman year?"

Erik smiled slightly typing the response. 'It's a challenge, but I'm enjoying it,' and for him it was true. It was challenging learning his way around, not getting lost and keeping up with the lessons and work. As well as juggling helping to care for the horses

Sophie nodded, then realized he couldn't see her. It was hard learning to deal with people who were different from her."Yeah, I remember Freshman year. It was pretty cool. Of course, it wasn't here. I just transferred here. But it was amazing at my old school."Sophie took another bite of her salad and heard her phone ringing. She dug around for it for a moment, then pulled it out. She quickly read her new text and replied to her best friend from her old school. She then turned the phone off, sure that even though Erik couldn't see, he'd think her rude for texting in the middle of their conversation.
She replaced the phone in her bag and turned her attention back to Erik."Sorry. I had a convo going with a friend of mine where I used to live. I told her I wouldn't be replying for a while."

(OOC: sorry my mind died and I became occupied)
Erik nodded typing the response 'I've been through more schools then I can count, I was placed up for adoption, and since then I've been fostered or adopted countless times,' he listened to what Sophie had said and nodded adding on: 'its fine' before he turned the laptop round so she could read what he'd said.

[[it's cool. no harm done. XD]]
Sophie frowned, unhappy for Erik, then voiced her concern."That's terrible, Erik. I don't know if I could take that..."She trailed off, gathering her thoughts.
She smiled when he 'said' something about her conversation being okay. She was glad he was so understanding. She quickly finished off her salad and very primly wiped the corners of her mouth with her napkin.
